Patrol units are gauged based on the following merits:

• Overall Activity

• Proficiency on Patrol

• Recent Disciplinary Action(s)

If you were accepted into and successfully completed the PAP program in BCSO, you must wait two weeks before becoming eligible for promotion.

Potential candidates to become Supervisors in Training are:

• Especially Active

• Effective Mentors

• Displaying Leadership Qualities

• Driven and Motivated to Promote

Promotions beyond Supervisor in Training are determined by guidelines set in the Corporal Program.

Supervisor promotions are determined by:

• Variety of Activity (Academy, Subdivisions, Patrol)

• Administrative Activity (Tickets)

• Mentoring Patrol Units

• Serving as a Positive Role Model

• Sergeants & Master Sergeants are required to remain at their rank for a minimum of two promotion panels. This allows us to properly evaluate your performance and effectiveness in the position over a set period of time. Meeting the minimum requirement of two promotion panels does not guarantee an automatic promotion. To be considered for promotion at the earliest opportunity, individuals are expected to stand out by consistently going above and beyond the standard expectations of their role. 

Promotions into command staff are determined by department heads based on the needs of the department as well as the merits displayed by the prospective supervisor.

Major are required to remain at their rank for a minimum of three promotion panels. This allows us to properly evaluate your performance and effectiveness in the position over a set period of time. Promotions into the heads team are determined by the Office of the Sheriff (01-05) and typically is the result of exemplary service within the command team either in a high command position (Captain) or especially great work in a Department Overwatch position.

If you are on LOA or ROA, you are not eligible for promotion. Time spent on LOA or ROA also does not count toward minimum time in rank eligibility requirements.
